Medical malpractice: Failure to diagnose may cause brain abscess

Throughout this blog, we have discussed a variety of brain injuries that can occur as a result of medical malpractice. Traumatic brain injuries, brain damage during birth and brain injuries caused by lack of oxygen are some of the brain injuries we have discussed. Those injuries, however, aren't the only ones that a person might suffer from. Another serious brain injury is a brain abscess. Our Pennsylvania readers might like to know more about this serious brain injury.

A pocket of infection on the brain is also known as a brain abscess. The abscess must be confined in its own pocket, which is known as being encapsulated. There are several causes of a brain abscess, including germs entering the brain through an open wound, infection entering the brain through the blood stream and infection spreading to the brain from other areas.

In the latter case, a failure of a medical professional to diagnose and treat a condition like a sinus infection, tooth infection or ear infection can be the cause. What seems like a minor oversight can have devastating effects if the person does end up with a brain abscess because of an untreated infection elsewhere in the body.

Early detection of a brain abscess is vital to maximize the effectiveness of the treatment. In most cases, hospitalization, surgery and antibiotics might all be necessary. This can mean considerable medical bills for some people.

With that in mind, you can see why anyone who has a brain abscess that occurs because of a failure to diagnose or medical negligence might opt to seek compensation. Any monetary awards made in the case might help to offset the bills from diagnosis and treatment.
